Electronic Data Capture (EDC) is evolving from just a data capture tool into the entire clinical trial platform. Data Management, Trial Management, Safety Reporting, and other key functional areas are now required to be part of the electronic platform used to conduct clinical trials. The eClinical platform, the combination of people, processes, and technology used to support the electronic conduct of a clinical trial is the new direction.

click to registerAn EDC platform tends to focus on data collection, query management, patient enrollment and perhaps a few other areas, leaving wide gaps in the clinical trial process. Mature EDC products are now hitting their value-add limits because these products do not address the "rest" of the clinical trial processes and participants. This has driven the movement to eClinical platforms. Various constituencies such as sponsors, investigators, contract research organizations, and prospective patients participate in a clinical trial over many more areas than just data collection. The new breed of eClinical suites focus on a wider variety of areas including but not limited to; Data Management, Safety Reporting, Trial Management, eMonitoring, study budgets, resource planning, document tracking (informed consent, IRB approvals, protocol related documents, etc.,), patient enrollment and randomization, dictionary coding, statistical analysis, electronic submissions, product/inventory tracking, in-depth reporting via a Clinical Trial Portal, eCRF design and printing, and easy integration and interfaces with external systems.

Immediate access to all aspects of the information collected via an eClinical suite of products can increase patient safety, enhance decision making, and save considerable time and money.
