Best Practices in Patient Recruitment and Retention for Diabetes Trials

  • Despite the growing prevalence of diabetes around the world, clinical trials face significant recruitment challenges brought on by increasing competition for patients, eligibility criteria and stricter regulatory requirements. Well over 200 drugs are currently in development for diabetes and related conditions. Given this level of drug development activity, as many as 500,000 patients are needed to enroll in these trials. To reduce the risk of costly enrollment delays, tailored recruitment strategies need to proactively address protocol challenges, consider patient motivations and complement local recruitment practices.

    Missing data may also have costly consequences at the end of a study. Retention of patients has been recently highlighted by regulatory pressures to collect final status on outcomes trials. To reduce the risk of dropout or lost to follow-up, addressing protocol challenges up front may help to mitigate this risk. Retention strategies should be designed to reduce barriers to enrollment, promote protocol compliance and ensure a means of follow up with patients.

    Erica Caveney, MD, Senior Medical Director & Therapeutic Strategy Head, Diabetes, Quintile

    What she does: Dr. Erica Caveney is a Senior Director, Medical, within Quintiles. As Quintiles’ Global Therapeutic Strategic Head of Diabetes, she chairs Quintiles’ Diabetes Center of Excellence. Dr. Caveney is Board Certified in Internal Medicine (2001-2011) and Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism (2005-2015). She started her career at Quintiles as a therapeutic medical monitor, serving as Global Medical Advisor for multiple Phase 2-4 diabetes and hypertension studies. Most recently she led the physician team within the Cardiovascular and Metabolism Delivery Group.

    Experience and Expertise: Dr. Caveney’s special areas of interests include Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Obesity, Metabolic Syndrome, and CV Outcomes studies. She has authored many peer-reviewed articles on diabetes and obesity, including articles on diabetes biomarkers, cardiovascular outcomes studies in anti-diabetes drugs, and a review of obesity drugs.

    Education: Dr. Caveney completed medical school at West Virginia University School of Medicine and her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at West Virginia University Hospitals. Additionally, she completed her Endocrinology fellowship at the University of North Carolina Hospitals.

    Tracy Stewart, MBA, Associate Director, Patient Recruitment, Quintiles

    What she does:Tracy specializes in the development of patient recruitment and retention strategies in collaboration with Quintiles’ study teams to support the delivery of clinical trials across a full range of therapeutic areas. As a member of Quintiles Diabetes Center of Excellence, she has a particular focus on refining “best practices” in recruitment and retention within this indication

    Experience and Expertise:She has been with Quintiles for more than three years. Prior to joining Quintiles, Tracy spent eight years of her career in medical education and four years in hospital administration.

    Education:Tracy holds a master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Houston. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design from North Carolina State University.

    Scott Oakes, PhD, Associate Clinical Project Management Director, Cardiovascular and Metabolic Therapeutic Area, Quintile

    What he does:Currently, Scott serves as the Global project Director for a global Diabetes, Cardiovascular and Renal Outcomes mega-trial

    Experience and Expertise:Scott has 14 years experience in Pharma R&D including nine years in the CRO industry. The majority of his experience has involved managing global clinical trials in Diabetes and associated indications including diabetic nephropathy and diabetic neuropathy.

    Education:Scott holds a PhD and honours degree in synthetic organic chemistry.

    Bernadette Tosti, Manager, Market Development, Quintiles Communications, Quintiles

    What she does:In her market development management role at Quintiles, Bernadette supports the therapeutic delivery teams to identify and recruit patients into trials via her expertise in digital media, patient insights, engagement and motivation and patient recruitment and retention.

    Experience and Expertise:Bernadette served as a patient recruitment manger at Quintiles for four years before transitioning to her current role. Prior to joining Quintiles, Bernadette spent two years at an advertising agency focusing on the pharmaceutical vertical and two years at a patient recruitment agency focused on digital patient recruitment.

    Education:Bernadette holds a BA in English from Boston College.
