    Rise to the challenge and enter Wales’ premier business planning competition

    The Technium Challenge is an annual business planning competition designed to assist companies with high-growth potential develop business strategies for the UK and European market. The winner of the competition with receive free office space for 1 year within one of the 10 Technium Centres in Wales and a bespoke business support package.

    Technium is a technology-led network of business incubation centres across Wales supporting the growth of emerging technology businesses and providing international soft-landing for businesses entering the UK and looking to establish a foothold in Europe. Inside Technium, companies are supported by a team of business and technical support staff and have access to specialist laboratory facilities and communal networking areas.  Strong partnerships forged between Technium and local Centres of Research Excellence provide specialist academic support for research & development projects.

    The competition is supported in the U.S. by the Welsh Government's economic development arm, International Business Wales.

    ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS:

    Cheryl Dennis, Vice President, International Business Wales  

    Cheryl Dennis is a Vice President for International Business Wales, the inward investment arm of the Welsh Assembly Government. International Business Wales works with companies seeking to enter the UK/European market for the first time whilst also assisting with expansions/partial relocations of businesses already based there. Cheryl has been based in IBW's New York office for over 4 years.

    Cheryl also has a number of years' experience in supporting business start-ups in her previous roles, both with the Welsh Development Agency and within the School of Management and Business, University of Wales.

    Cheryl holds a Bachelor degree in Business Management and a Masters of Philosophy in Marketing and Advertising.

    Dr. Steve Davies, Technium Director  

    Stephen Davies is the Director of Technium, a Wales-wide network of 10 state-of-the-art incubation centres managed by the Welsh Assembly Government.  Technium is designed to support the growth of young Science & Technology Businesses within Wales and to provide a supportive environment for international companies looking to establish a presence in Wales/UK.

    Steve has 12 years experience working in business incubation and has gained an in-depth understanding of the challenges faced by early stage technology businesses.  He initiated the Technium programme back in 1999 together with partners from academia and the private sector. He currently manages the Technium strategy on behalf of WAG.

    Steve also spent 15 years working for a US-owned semiconductor manufacturer where he worked as Design Manager developing next generation products for the telecomm industry. Steve worked both in the USA and Wales during this period.

    Steve holds a PhD in Semiconductor technology, an MBA and is a Chartered Engineer.

     

    Claire Rowley, Technium Marketing Manager


    Claire Rowley is the Marketing Manager of Technium, a Wales-wide network of 10 state-of-the-art incubation centres managed by the Welsh Assembly Government.  Technium is designed to support the growth of young Science & Technology Businesses within Wales and to provide a supportive environment for international companies looking to establish a presence in Wales/UK.

    Claire has 8 years experience working in business incubation and has gained an in-depth understanding of the challenges faced by early stage technology businesses.  One of the key programmes for which she is responsible is the Technium Challenge International business planning competition.  Through the competition, Claire works closely with International Business Wales (the inward investment division of the Welsh Assembly Government) to support international technology companies looking to establish a foothold in the UK marketplace.

    Claire also spent 5 years working in the London office of a former US-owned retail design consultancy where she worked as part of a team to develop marketing and branding solutions for major European retail clients such as Tesco, Halifax Building Society, Banco Popular and the Burton Group. Claire’s early career was spent working as a PR & Marketing Manager for an International Environmental and Animal Welfare charity. 

    Claire holds a post-graduate diploma in Marketing and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

      Hamish Edwards, Business Development/Executive Director, Xero (2007 overall Technium Challenge winner)

    Hamish Edwards was formerly CEO, now Chairman, of Openside, one of New Zealand’s fastest growing Chartered Accounting consulting firms. Openside grew strongly in the past four years and was recently placed fifth in a survey of New Zealand’s top 100 Accounting firms.

    Hamish's specific focus with his Openside clients has been on growth, financial and strategic matters. Hamish is passionate about business success and has frequently been referred to by entrepreneurs as their Virtual CFO. He is active within the financial community chairing the Wellington Tax Liaison Group and advising community groups on accounting and business issues.

    Hamish has worked as an Accountant for both Englefield Industries in Auckland and for BDO Spicers in Wellington. At Openside, Hamish has gained extensive experience working with some of New Zealand's fastest growing ICT businesses.

    Hamish is an SME expert and as such has written for the Fairfax Group, the National Business Review, M2 Magazine and various other publications about business issues. Hamish has also been a frequent guest on National Radio’s Jim Mora show.

    Hamish is a Chartered Accountant, holds a Certificate of Public Practice and has a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Otago, majoring in Marketing and Accounting.
