Improving Oral Dosage Formulations: Microencapsulation for Controlled and Immediate Release

The need for novel drug delivery technologies is on the rise as pharmaceutical companies face steep patent expiration cliffs and a dwindling number of candidates in the R&D pipeline.     Cory Berkland is Co-founder and CSO of Orbis Biosciences. He is a Professor in the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering and in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at The University of Kansas. He received MS and PhD degrees from the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where he co-invented and developed the Orbis technology. He is a leading expert in drug delivery and has recently been awarded the prestigious 2012 Controlled Release Society Young Investigator Award for his internationally recognized contributions in the science and technology of controlled release.
