Janes Chicken Nuggets Recalled Over Salmonella Risk

A popular brand of chicken nuggets is being recalled across Canada over fears of salmonella contamination.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) says Sofina Foods Inc. is recalling Janes brand Pub Style Chicken Nuggets from the marketplace.

The recall affects 800-gram packages with a best before date of December 15th, 2019 and a UPC code: 0 69299 12490 3.

Anyone with the affected product is being asked to throw it away or return it to the store where it was purchased for a refund.

The agency says there have been “illnesses associated with the consumption of this product,” but it doesn’t offer any more details.

The CFIA release does, however, warn of the dangers of food contaminated with salmonella, saying “Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections. Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.”

This recall was triggered by findings from an investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak. Additionally, the CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation, which could lead to the recall of other products.

This is the third time this year the agency has announced a recall on frozen chicken nuggets, after previous notices affecting Compliments brand and Crisp & Delicious brand products. It also follows the recall of Janes brand Pub Style Chicken Burgers last October and Pub Style Chicken Strips in November.
