Vir Bio is seeking a senior level chemist with a strong, hands-on background in Chemistry and protein conjugation to join our research team. You will play a critical role in expanding Vir’s platform technologies with a specific focus on antibody drug conjugates that will span discovery research through clinical development. You will help shape our protein conjugation and chemistry strategies and will play a critical role in leveraging the Company’s antibody platform into best-in-class products for infectious diseases and other therapeutic areas. You will report to the Director, Protein Chemistry Structural Biology and collaborate extensively with all research functions. This role will be located at our San Francisco Lab facility.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- You will design small molecules for lead discovery and optimization with a focus on intermediates for antibody drug conjugates
- You will manage outsourced medicinal chemistry groups to create and execute chemical syntheses
- Create and perform conjugations between proteins and small molecules, in collaboration with in-house protein chemistry team
- Analyze complex data sets to create testable design hypotheses to advance project goals
- You will be a chemistry and/or protein conjugation subject matter expert for internal project teams as well as external engagements with CROs/CMOs and collaborators
- Prepare scientific reports for internal and external communications, including intellectual property filings
Qualifications and Experience:
- PhD in Chemistry or related discipline and 7+ years related industry experience or equivalent education/experience
- Experience with organic and synthetic chemistry
- Extensive hands-on experience with several synthetic methodologies, method development, instrument troubleshooting, quality control and process analysis
- Experience with generation, optimization and characterization of antibody-drug conjugates is of particular interest
- Experience managing outsourced full-time small molecule chemistry groups
- Demonstrated leadership in chemistry and/or protein conjugation as documented by scientific accomplishments and strong publication record
- Hands-on experience with antibodies/proteins is a plus
- Familiarity with biophysical methods is preferred
- Demonstrated ability to build and manage successful relationships with internal research teams
- Excellent communication skills, logical and analytical thinking, ability to multitask, collaborate , work independently and the ability to learn, and problem solve
