Job Description

BioCryst Pharmaceuticals discovers novel, oral, small-molecule medicines that treat rare diseases in which significant unmet medical needs exist and an enzyme plays a key role in the biological pathway of the disease. Oral, once-daily ORLADEYO™ (berotralstat) is approved in the United States for the prevention of HAE attacks in adults and pediatric patients 12 years and older, and under regulatory review for approval in Japan and the European Union. BioCryst has several ongoing development programs including, an oral Factor D inhibitor for the treatment of complement-mediated diseases, galidesivir, a potential treatment for COVID-19, Marburg virus disease and Yellow Fever, and BCX9250, an ALK-2 inhibitor for the treatment of fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva. RAPIVAB® (peramivir injection), a viral neuraminidase inhibitor for the treatment of influenza, is BioCryst’s first approved product and has received regulatory approval in the U.S., Canada, Australia, Japan, Taiwan, and Korea. JOB SUMMARY:

The VP, Intellectual Property (IP) will be responsible for managing BioCryst’s global IP portfolio, including patents, copyrights, trade secrets and know-how. Providing intellectual property strategic guidance and counsel for a growing rare and infectious disease portfolio.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Directly manage an internal team of IP professionals, and provide substantive leadership to additional in-house staff as IP issues arise in their areas of responsibility
  • Manage a global network of licensor and outside patent and trademark counsel providing IP advice and support to the company
  • Work with BioCryst's most senior technologists to identify, prioritize and develop the company's existing and future IP assets
  • Proactively engage with business clients to optimize IP positioning relative to key product and service roadmaps
  • Assist in the negotiation of key inbound patent license and technology agreements and outbound licensing opportunities
  • Support the enforcement of BioCryst's IP rights against, and the company's defense against any infringement claims of third parties
  • Oversee patent infringement analyses
  • Evaluate and advise on IP risks and opportunities in M&A; transactions and other strategic initiatives
  • This role will report to BioCryst's SVP and CLO and will work closely with other attorneys and key BioCryst business executives around the world to determine both current and future opportunities to optimize BioCryst's IP positioning

 

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A J.D. or LLM is required, with background in chemistry or biochemistry highly preferred
  • 10+ years IP management experience in global operating companies, including responsibility for IP strategy, patent portfolio management and operations, IP counseling, and IP licensing and litigation required
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, the evolving IP markets
  • Highly developed analytical, communications, collaboration and leadership skills
  • Creative, "out-of-the-box" thinker
  • Active network within the global IP community
