National Coffee Day 2022: History, Significance and Deals

One of the world’s most consumed beverages, coffee, has its own national holiday that takes place each year on September 29.

Each year, National Coffee Day falls on September 29 in the US and Canada. Not to be confused with International Coffee Day, which happens just two days later on October 1, National Coffee Day 2022 also takes place on the same day as National Starbucks Day. Here’s everything you need to know about the history of coffee, the significance of the holiday and deals to expect from coffee chains.

History and Significance of National Coffee Day 2022

National Coffee Day celebrates one of the world’s most popular beverages. For many people, coffee is their reason for getting out of bed in the morning. Whether it’s consumed as a morning ritual, an afternoon pick-me-up or an evening drink to help stay awake, National Coffee Day 2022 pays homage to all of these and everything in between.

Before delving into the holiday, it’s important to understand the history of coffee itself. The origins of coffee are told through stories of a ninth century goat herder who discovered that his goats had more energy when eating berries from a specific tree. By the 15th century, coffee began being exported from Ethiopia to Yemen and other places in Arabia where it was consumed as a beverage.

At this same time, coffee houses began to pop up in Cairo, Egypt, particularly around a religious university that was associated with Sufism, and they also moved into Syria. In 1607, Captain John Smith, one of the founders of the colony of Virginia, brought coffee to what would eventually become the US. As for Europeans, they got their first taste of coffee in 1645 when mainland Europe’s first official coffeehouse opened in Venice.

As the popularity of coffee spread throughout Arabia through Italy, to the US, Europe and all around the world, its stimulating properties became questionable by those in religious practices. However, that didn’t stop the growth and development of coffee, which has now become a favorite beverage all over the globe.

As for National Coffee Day, the holiday appears to have gotten its start around 2005 and has become a way to enjoy and celebrate the highly beloved beverage.

National Coffee Day Deals

Coffee chains across the country — from small coffee shops to fast food joints to convenience stores — are taking advantage of National Coffee Day to get people through their doors with freebies and deals. However, one of America’s most popular coffee spots isn’t participating this year. Those that visit Starbucks on September 29 will not come across any special deals, drinks or rewards.

Despite this, plenty of other beloved coffee spots are offering deals. On National Coffee Day, Dunkin’ Donuts Perks members can get a free medium hot or iced coffee when they buy anything at Dunkin’. Krispy Kreme is offering two deals for guests on September 29: all customers are eligible to receive a free iced or hot brewed coffee and Krispy Kreme Rewards members can also get a free donut of choice to enjoy with their free iced or hot coffee.

Aroma Joe’s, Bean Box, Blue Bottle, Caribou Coffee and Tim Hortons are among the many coffee chains offering deals on National Coffee Day 2022. Fast-food restaurants including Burger King, McDonald’s and Panera Bread will also be offering guests special deals on National Coffee Day.
