Nestle Joins Delivery Service Loop, With Reusable Häagen-Dazs Containers

Häagen-Dazs is debuting a modern looking stainless-steel ice cream canister designed by Nestlé's global research and development group.

Nestle’s Häagen-Dazs ice cream has released a stainless-steel container, bringing them one step closer to their goal of a 100 percent reusable packaging by 2025.

In order to bring this goal to fruition, the company has partnered with TerraCycle’s Loop a new circular economy delivery service. The service is a subscription-based model where deliveries are made to the customer’s home in packaging that is cleaned, refilled and reused. The products can then be sent back via a free pick up to avoid waste.

As part of the partnership, Häagen-Dazs will be sold on Loop in a reusable double-walled steel ice cream container. Laurent Frexie, Nestlé CEO for Zone Americas, urges other companies to join in helping to create a sustainable supply chain for future generations.

“Loop provides a much-needed innovation platform, challenging companies to take a fresh look at our value chains and integrate reusable product packaging as part of our efforts to waste-reduction,” he said. “Nestlé is proud to be a founding investor and partner of Loop. It’s a critical part of our commitment to work with consumers to protect our planet for future generations.”

The platform was announced at the World Economic Forum, and will offer more than 300 products in reusable packaging from big-names like Procter & Gamble, Nestlé, Unilever, PepsiCo, Mondelez International, and Danone. The products will be available both through e-commerce sites and at retail partner brick-and-mortar locations.

With the launch of Loop, Häagen-Dazs is debuting a modern looking stainless-steel ice cream canister designed by Nestlé’s global research and development group. The packaging was created for transportation, and the company says it will keep the ice cream fresh and cold from the time the canisters are filled until they are delivered to consumers’ homes.

Häagen-Dazs Non-Dairy Mocha Chocolate Cookie

When it comes to flavors, customers shopping using Loop will have a few options to choose from. Including non-dairy options, like Chocolate Salted Fudge, Coconut Caramel and Mocha Chocolate Cookie, as well as traditional favorites, like Vanilla or Strawberry. These flavors will be available during the New York-based pilot test which is scheduled to launch in the first half of 2019.

This partnership could create more incentive for other retail businesses to work with recycling organizations that aid the environment. Tom Szasky, the Founder and CEO of TerraCycle, said he created Loop as a business plan to help consumer purchased goods eliminate waste altogether.

“Loop will not just eliminate the idea of packaging waste, but greatly improve the product experience and the convenience in how we shop,” he said. “Through Loop, consumers can now responsibly consume products in specially-designed durable, reusable or fully recyclable packaging made from materials like alloys, glass, and engineered plastics. When a consumer returns the packaging, it is refilled, or the content is reused or recycled through ground-breaking technology.”

Loop doesn’t just end at Haagen-Dazs, the service is making plans to expand its pilot projects internationally, with British and French multinational grocery retail companies like Tesco and Carrefour.

In addition to this, KFC has committed to using 100 percent reusable plastic for consumer based products by 2025, further creating an incentive for food companies and recycling businesses to work together to create more sustainable packaging.
