Orig3n to Offer $49 Genetic Test Kit for Amazon Prime Day

According to Orig3n, their Mind & Body DNA test provides customers with a personal genetic profile which includes the role of genes on nutrition, fitness, beauty, enlightenment and behaviour.

In an attempt to compete with genetic testing kit companies like 23andMe and AncestryDNA, Boston-based biotech company Orig3n Inc. has announced they’ll be offering their new Orig3n Mind & Body DNA test as part of Amazon’s Prime Day celebrations. The product is priced at $49 and will be exclusively offered to Amazon Prime Members through the end of today.

“We are excited to bring this exclusive new Mind & Body DNA test to Amazon Prime members,” said Robin Y. Smith, CEO of Orig3n. “DNA is a valuable tool which helps people learn more about what makes them unique and discover how to make informed choices about their lifestyle.”

According to Orig3n, their Mind & Body DNA test provides customers with a personal genetic profile which includes the role of genes on nutrition, fitness, beauty, enlightenment and behaviour. They say this information can help individuals understand how their genetic makeup influences their response to foods and exercise, and how it affects the metabolism.

In contrast to other currently available direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic tests which give individuals an idea of their susceptibility to certain inherited diseases, Orig3n’s Mind & Body DNA test reportedly provides information on how a person’s skin and hair may react to environmental factors and how their genes may affect the way they experience certain emotions.

In all, the test analyzes 20 different genes. The company says the report includes “recommendations for users on how to integrate insights into their active lifestyles.”

Like other genetic testing kits, Orig3n uses a cheek swab to collect a sample of cells for analysis. The company says it processes samples in a CLIA Certified laboratory and does not share genetic information without a user’s consent.

In March, rival genetic testing company 23andMe announced that they will now report on BRCA variants known to influence an individual’s risk of developing breast, ovarian and prostate cancer. The company’s DNA tests include information on genetic health risks for celiac disease, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, along with information on ancestry, wellness, carrier states and other traits. This 23andMe DNA Test – Health + Ancestry Personal Genetic Service is priced at $199 on Amazon.

Another competitor, AncestryDNA, focuses solely on uncovering an individual’s genetic roots and is priced at $115. Compared to these two tests currently on the market, the Orig3n Mind & Body DNA test is clearly targeting a different consumer who is interested in learning about how their genes affect their health and wellbeing but aren’t looking for information on their likelihood of developing inherited diseases or exploring their ancestry.
