Panera Bread Recalls Cream Cheese Products Due To Listeria Contamination

Panera Bread Co. has recalled all of their 2-oz and 8-oz cream cheese products due to potential Listeria contamination. The café/bakery chain announced the recall after internal testing of a single variety of their 2-oz cream cheese products had tested positive for the bacteria.

According to the company, the positive results came from products made in a single production day, whereas batches produced before or after that day tested negative for the bacteria. The recalled cream cheese products have an expiration date on or before April 2, 2018 and the potentially contaminated products were only sold in US locations.

“The safety of our guests and associates is paramount,” said Blaine Hurst, president and chief executive officer. “Therefore, we are recalling all cream cheese products sold in the US with an active shelf life. We have likewise ceased all manufacturing in the associated cream cheese facility. Only one variety of 2-oz cream cheese from a single day yielded the positive result. Our intent is to go above and beyond for our guests.”

The company issued a press release highlighting all affected products. The 2-oz products listed were: Plain Cream Cheese, Reduced-Fat Plain Cream Cheese, Reduced-Fat Chive & Onion Cream Cheese, Reduced-Fat Honey Walnut Cream Cheese, Reduced-Fat Wild Blueberry Cream Cheese. The affected 8-oz products mentioned were: Plain Cream Cheese, Reduced-Fat Plain Cream Cheese, Reduced-Fat Chive & Onion Cream Cheese, Reduced-Fat Honey Walnut Cream Cheese, Reduced-Fat Wild Blueberry Cream Cheese.

The FDA describes Listeria monocytogenes as a bacterial organism that can cause severe illness in those who consume it. Young children or adults who have weakened immune systems may have fatal reactions to listeria infections. Healthy individuals usually experience symptoms such as stomach pain, nausea, headaches and stiffness.

No illnesses associated with consumption have been reported. The company advises those who have purchased any of these products to immediately dispose of them.
