Detecting Arrhythmias in Clinical Trials Using ECG Monitoring

Arrhythmia and syncope are two important conditions that should be optimally managed. Many cases of recurrent atrial fibrillation do not lead to symptoms but still present a threat to the patient due to the risk of cerebral and systemic embolism, which not only applies to patients on drug therapy but also to those who have received catheter ablation. The detection of asymptomatic atrial fibrillation influences further treatment strategies, especially with regard to anticoagulation. Ensuring there is real-time access to data is an important consideration in identifying the best strategy to monitor atrial fibrillation and arrhythmias.

The goals of electrocardiographic (ECG) monitoring have expanded from simple heart rate and basic rhythm determination to the diagnosis of complex arrhythmias, detection of acute and often silent myocardial ischemia and identification of drug-induced prolonged QT interval. There is potential for event and continuous ECG monitoring to detect AF and arrhythmias in a timely manner, especially in a clinical trial setting,

Previously, Dr. Voloshko served as a research fellow at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and Chief of Cardiology at Riga City Hospital in Riga, Latvia, an affiliate of the Latvian Medical University. Board-certified in cardiology and internal medicine, Dr. Voloshko received her MD, magna cum laude, at the First St. Petersburg Medical School in Russia.
