Hands-on Healthcare Simulations in Government

Optimal decision making in healthcare requires the ability to make accurate forecasts of the consequences of various clinical or policy options. In a previous webinar, Dr. Mark Roberts, professor of health policy and former president of the Society of Medical Decision Making, demonstrated several modeling techniques. At the end of the course, he briefly discussed ARCHeS, an online interface to the Archimedes Model. The Archimedes Model is a full-scale, carefully validated simulation model of health and healthcare. It was started 20 years ago by evidence-based medicine pioneer David Eddy, MD, PhD, and uses advanced methods of mathematics, computing, and data systems to forecast health and costs for different interventions on populations of interest.

On September 19, Roshan Shah, manager of client services, and Dr. Badri Rengarajan, medical director at Archimedes, will demonstrate how the ARCHeS interface can be used to inform health policy decision making by government officials at the federal and state levels. They will address the following items in terms of their impact on health, quality of life, and medical costs:

  • Prioritization of healthcare prevention activities
  • Identification of wellness programs
  • Comparison of supplemental care management guidelines

Archimedes

Archimedes Inc. is a healthcare modeling and analytics organization. Founded by David Eddy, MD, PhD, a pioneer in evidence based medicine, its core technology – the Archimedes Model – is a clinically realistic, mathematical model of human physiology, diseases, interventions, and healthcare systems. The Model is continually validated by comparing the results of simulated trials to the results of multinational clinical trials and cohort studies, and the results are published.

Through products such as IndiGO and ARCHeS, Archimedes helps people understand the implications of their decisions. For the last 15 years, Archimedes has assisted many organizations in the United States and Europe answer questions related to health and economic outcomes research, policy creation, clinical trial design, and performance improvement. Archimedes, a Kaiser Permanente Innovation, is based in San Francisco, California.
