Summary
The EHS Specialist II is responsible for facilitating OSHA and EPA compliance through support and implementation of EHS programs and policies. This individual will work with their manager to proactively identify hazardous conditions using a risk-based approach, evaluate and provide input to revise and improve EHS programs, provide training and guidance to all staff, and lead by example to ensure the continual improvement of the organization’s safety culture.
Responsibilities and Job Duties
- Independently conducts and manages appropriate records for: risk assessments, incident investigations, and periodic inspections associated with all function-specific groups. Assists staff and management in ensuring areas are safe, operational and effective by coordinating with departments in determining the most effective CAPAs based on a comprehensive determination of the associated workplace factors that contribute to the root cause of At Risk, Near Miss, or Lagging incidents.
- Responsible for emergency response training and spill supply inventory management, conducts spill response evaluation and cleanup guidance, manages evacuation drills and training for all Maryland facilities, maintains records and uses independent judgment to audit and improve the Emergency Action Program.
- Independently performs compliance reporting for RCRA, the Montgomery County HazMat Use Permit, and the Montgomery County Recycling (SORRT) program regulations.
- Independently manages the Exposure Control Program vaccine surveillance, recordkeeping, and training.
- Independently manages the SDS and Chemical Inventory databases for all MacroGenics’ facilities.
- Assists in providing and monitoring EHS-based trainings for new hires. Supports the development of the training program and all EHS programs to ensure compliance with applicable Federal, Maryland State, and local regulatory requirements but also to ensure that all staff clearly understand how compliance produces a safe, healthful, and efficient work environment.
- Coordinates and manages the Maryland-based Hazardous and Universal Waste programs for compliance with applicable COMAR and RCRA standards for the Rockville and Frederick, MD-LQG facilities.
- Responsible for all PPE management, including staff safety shoes and prescription safety eyewear vendor visits. This includes scheduling and record-keeping to provide their manager with information to maintain and manage the EHS budget and service agreements. Manage the stock of disposable lab coats, non-prescription safety glasses, visitor safety glasses and any additional PPE.
- Supports the maintenance and promulgates the improvement of all company-wide communication tools to ensure MacroGenics’ staff can quickly and conveniently acquire information they need to comply with OSHA RTK, RCRA, State and local regulations, MacroGenics’ company EHS policy, and best practices.
Minimum Qualifications
Education, Certifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Environmental Health Sciences, or other scientific discipline or equivalent years of education and relevant experience in EHS.
- Working knowledge and experience with applicable, local, state and/or Federal RCRA Hazardous Waste, DOT and IATA, OSHA Health & Safety and Recordkeeping, and WSSC Industrial Waste Code regulations.
- A minimum of four (4) years’ experience in EHS field specific to the biotech/pharmaceutical or related life sciences
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to navigate, interpret, and apply appropriate local, state and federal regulations.
- Ability to successfully manage multiple projects and daily responsibilities with minimal direction
- Expected to use project management tools to communicate the status of and drive projects to completion.
- Ability and desire to work in a calm, friendly, and patient manner with a diverse workforce.
- Must be a team player able to build productive business relationships and effect collaboration across varied functional groups.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work and maintain focus in a fast-paced, multiple-priority environment effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision.
- Excellent computer skills required, particularly in Excel, Outlook, Adobe Pro DC, and Word.
- Ability to lead by example and inspire staff to work safely by encouraging a positive attitude regarding their safety.
- Must be able to facilitate occasional projects not possible during normal business hours.
