Multidisciplinary Medical Affairs Doctor of Pharmacy Fellowship
Description: Rotational 2-year post-PharmD industry fellowship
Goal: To gain work experience within the biotechnology industry and a thorough understanding of rare conditions while collaborating cross-functionally as an integral member of the Medical Affairs team. This unique opportunity will prepare the fellow for a position within Medical Affairs, such as an in-house role within Medical Information, Medical Communications and field-based Medical Science Liaison (MSL) roles. A 6-month elective rotation will also be offered to allow the fellow to gain an understanding of cross-functional roles outside of Medical Affairs. The elective will be chosen based on the company needs, fellow’s preference, and preceptor availability.
Medical Information (6 months):
- Understand the role and responsibilities of a Medical Information Specialist in the biotechnology industry
- Create and provide timely, accurate, and balanced medical/scientific and technical information in response to inquiries from healthcare professionals, consumers, and managed care organizations with standard and customized response documents, scientific slide decks, and clinical dossiers
- Provide high quality review of promotional, commercial, medical, and scientific materials to ensure accuracy and balance of medical and scientific content
- Attend medical and scientific meetings and congresses to provide support for Medical Information and/or medical education booths
- Attend internal Medical Affairs meetings and collaborate with other key stakeholders outside Medical Information
Medical Communications (6 months):
- Understand the role and skills required of a Medical Communications Professional as part of a specialized Medical Affairs function in the biotechnology industry
- Collaborate with Medical Affairs team members and cross-functional partners to develop a plan that supports strategic and tactical communication of scientific data
- Gain exposure to core principles of Good Publications Practices (GPP3) for industry-based publications and work through the development of a publication, starting with concept development to submission to a publications platform (scientific journal or congress)
- Observe development of team-based comprehensive congress plan which incorporates strategic objectives and derivative tactics
- Learn the principles of project management and prioritization in the context of medical communication
Medical Scientific Liaison (6 months):
- Learn and apply the core functions of a Medical Science Liaison (MSL) role by learning all therapeutic areas in company relevant disease states, learning strategies of KOL relationship management, delivering scientific education presentations, attending and participating in MSL field visits, and collecting clinical insights
- Play a critical role in field medical operations by utilizing field medical customer management tools and assisting in the development of insight reports and territory plans
- Participate in the congress planning process, including the identification of relevant content, coverage of sessions, and development of post-congress summary report
- Collaborate with Medical Directors, Medical Communications, and vendors in the creation and revision of field medical resources
Elective Rotation Options (6 Months):
Understand the role and skills required for one of the selected functional areas in the biotechnology industry. Work on assigned projects within the selected functional area. Elective rotation options are based on preceptor availability, candidate’s preference, and/or company need. Opportunities for elective rotations may include functional areas such as:
- Regulatory Strategy
- Regulatory Advertising and Promotion
- Clinical Development
- Pharmacovigilance
- Marketing
- Health Economics & Outcome Research and Real World Evidence
- Extension of Medical Affairs functional role
Please note that this is a full-time (fixed-term) position.
Qualifications:
- Must have a Doctor of Pharmacy degree (PharmD) from an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited school or college prior to start date
- Ability to legally work in the United States for the duration of the program, either through a green card or as a citizen of the United States
- Ability to travel: job requires travel up to 20%
Preferred Skills
- Must possess strong presentation and communication skills
- Scientific writing and literature evaluation skills are preferred

Spark takes into consideration a combination of candidate’s education, training, and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, and external market and internal value when determining a salary for potential new employees. The base salary range for this position is currently from $60,600-$90,800.
