Are you passionate about developing cures for neurological diseases?
JAX Preclinical Services execute mouse in vivo studies for our external customers developing drugs in a variety of areas. The Neurobiology department focusses its services on neurodegeneration, nerves and muscle diseases, epilepsy, and autism spectrum disorders to name a few.
Working under limited supervision, the Preclinical Technologist III is fully proficient in animal procedures of In Vivo Pharmacology studies, with latitude for independent judgement; performs advanced in vivo biomethods, including complex health observations, drugs administrations (e.g. brain injections), and tests of locomotor and cognitive behaviors, and highly developed procedures. Additional responsibilities include understanding study timelines and communicating issues effectively. The Level II technologist is expected to proactively seek out new opportunities that will enhance the team such as serving as a mentor, checking for quality gaps, organizing lab spaces for inspections and audits and understanding scientific content. Note that, as often in drug discovery, teams may be required to work early, late or weekend shifts, holidays, and overtime on a few occasions every year.
The wage range is $26.65 - $38.64 per hour. Pay will be determined based upon qualifications and experience.

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
- Technical Execution – Biomethods in mice such as handling (i.e restraint, ear notch, body weights, tail tipping), drug administration (i.e. PO, SC, IP, IV), blood collection, basic necropsy and blood processing. Perform pharmacology and neurobiology in vivo procedures, both in-life and post-mortem, as required from specific studies requirements. In-life procedures include animal care, health observations, tests of locomotor and cognitive behaviors. Post-mortem procedures consist in tissue observations, collections and preservation. Adhere to all SOPs, policies and regulatory procedures. Most tasks are performed with PPEs in a vivarium. Requires knowledge of barrier room function and animal husbandry as normally acquired with greater than 1 year of successful experience in lab animal work. In addition, performs complex procedures, such as neurobehavioral testing, biosignals recordings (e.g. ECG, EMG and EEG) or molecular biology routine procedures, as required from specific study designs. Adhere to all SOPs, policies and regulatory procedures.
- Accurate data entry and management including in lab IT systems and databases. Maintain appropriate experiment documentation as required by protocols and SOP’s. This requires experience with digital technologies as acquired through regular use of computers and cloud servers.
- Training to perform novel, complex procedures to proficiency levels and/or participate in the development of new advanced procedures.
- Lab Maintenance – Participate in equipment sanitation, maintenance and inventory of consumables and reagents, and maintenance of equipment through calibration, validation and monitoring.
- Research Lab tasks – Accurate measurement of chemicals in powder and liquid form, complex formulation protocols execution and troubleshooting, experiment record keeping, blood processing, molecular biology techniques including DNA/RNA extraction and analysis (PCR, real-time PCR), protein analysis (ELISA, Western blots), and histology processing (immunohistology).
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree with 4 or more years’ applicable work experience in a laboratory/animal care setting. Previous mouse experience with dosing/sample collection is required.
- Capable of performing a wide range of animal biomethods, and complex procedures.
- Capable of developing, with guidance, new lab animal procedures.
- Lab equipment operation experience.
- Excellent communication and listening skills with proven ability to effectively communicate with others both verbally and in writing to clearly and effectively exchange information. Proven excellent writing skills.
- Excellent problem solving skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Ability to work independently with minimal oversight. Ability to make decisions that adhere to all SOPs, policies and regulatory procedures.
- Able to work in in vitro and in vivo environments, and train entry-level team members.
- Ability to work flexible shifts (early or evening/week-end/holidays).
