Bayer’s MEDRAD Centargo CT Injection System Set to Optimize CT Workflows with FDA Nod

Bayer’s MEDRAD Centargo CT Injection System Set to Optimize CT Workflows with FDA Nod

The MEDRAD Centargo CT injection system has an automated design that reduces the complexity of setting up and administering contrast media, improving efficiency and shortening overall exam times.

Bayer recently announced that it has received US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance for its MEDRAD Centargo computed tomography (CT) injection system, a multi-patient injector that aims to improve workflow efficiency in CT imaging procedures.

The system has design features that integrate with Bayer’s portfolio of products, particularly in high-volume CT suites, said Bayer in a press release.

With the pre-assembled 24-hour day set, multi-patient setups can be completed in under two minutes, significantly reducing preparation time.

The snap-in patient line auto-primes upon insertion and is ready for the next patient in less than 20 seconds. This allows radiology departments to handle a greater volume of patients without compromising the quality or accuracy of imaging.

According to Bayer, Centargo’s automated design simplifies the process for technologists, reducing the complexity of setting up and administering contrast media, while offering enhanced safety features to protect both patients and healthcare professionals.

The Centargo system aims to provide faster and more accurate contrast injection, allowing radiology teams to improve workflow efficiency that will translate into optimized imaging precision with reduced patient wait times and shorter room turnover and overall exam times.

This valuable support and efficiency are much needed in radiology departments given shortages of radiology technologists across the US and challenges in meeting the growing demand for medical imaging.

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, Canada, became the first hospital in North America to install and integrate the MEDRAD Centargo CT injection system across both acute care and outpatient settings.

By minimizing procedural and administrative tasks, the system allows radiology technologists to concentrate more on patient care, particularly in high-volume settings.

Mike Minoo, manager of CT and Interventional Radiology at Sunnybrook, said the system is having a significant impact on the department’s technologists, facilitating them to do their work “quickly and with less worry.”

“For example, because I am spending less time preparing the injector and its components, I have more time to spend with the patient, increasing their comfort level and understanding of the procedure. The quality of this interaction provides a better overall experience for both myself as a clinician and the patient,” explained Minoo.

The Centargo includes elements such as an integrated barcode reader that simplifies data entry, offering seamless traceability and access to contrast and injection details when paired with automated documentation software.

The advanced contrast injection system features piston-based technology, enabling dual flow (delivery of contrast and saline at the same time) for greater flexibility with even the most demanding protocols.

The automated pre-injection and post-injection steps help ensure accurate and consistent dosing of contrast material, which is essential for high-quality CT scans.

“Since its launch in 2020, Centargo has served approximately 7 million patients across 49 markets worldwide. The FDA clearance further demonstrates our nearly 40 years of CT innovation and commitment to delivering effective technologies to improve diagnostic imaging for patients,” said Sven Schmidt, head of Region Americas Radiology at Bayer.

“We know radiologists today are facing a continuously increasing workload, and the automation, integration and mobility of the MEDRAD Centargo CT injection system help radiology staff do more with less, allowing them more time to focus on their patients.”
