Job Summary

Performs advanced biological experiments, research and analysis. Solves complex problems, taking a new perspective using existing solutions. Less hands-on work, more providing guidance. Serves as study director. Conducts quality control review, data reporting, workflow assessments and writes/reviews technical correspondence and technical documents.

Conducts research and testing on basic and applied principles of microbial, plant, human, and animal life, including origin, anatomy, and function of biological systems in both simple and complex settings. Collects and studies biological data to focus on structure, function, behavior, and tailored applications. Completes technical evaluations and/or assessments of biologics, biological mechanisms, or biological properties. May specialize in:

Microbiology: Investigates the growth, structure, development, physiology, and other characteristics of microscopic organisms to include at both the molecular and cellular level, as well as their ecology and function in mixed communities.

Genetics, Molecular/Cellular Biology: Studies and modifies the genetic system of organisms and singular and/or multi-cellular organisms. Understanding and engineering the function of an organism and humans at the genetic level including the expression of those genes into functioning RNAs and proteins and response to intracellular and extracellular stimuli.

Toxicology/Safety Pharmacology: could include but not limited to the study of adverse effects of substances on living organisms and investigates the potential undesirable pharmacodynamic effects of new chemical entities (NCEs) or biologics on physiological systems.

Virology: Study of viruses; could include but not limited to submicroscopic, parasitic particles of genetic material contained in a protein coat and virus-like agents.

Responsibilities

  • Performs complex assignments by compiling and evaluating test data and planning test experiments, including determination of test procedures, limits, and instrumentation.
  • Analyzes test data and results to determine acceptability or application of test item/system or validity of test data.
  • Analyzes and interprets data collected. Prepares technical reports and makes presentations to clients, both formal and informal.
  • Troubleshoots complex testing processes when expected results are not obtained.
  • Assists lower-level staff in resolving analysis problems.
  • Conducts and/or leads small technical projects or phases of technical projects.
  • May provide direction to and coordinate the efforts of technical support staff in the performance of assigned projects within time and budget constraints.
  • Assists with proposal efforts. May prepare technical sections of proposals.
  • Build relationships with internal and external clients and presents research results.
  • Communicate with clients regarding the schedule and quality of deliverables.
  • Contributes to IR&D studies. Develops innovative testing and/or analysis methods to improve the quality of results and/or the efficiency of the process.
  • Supports business development efforts led by others.
  • May assist with the coordination of and participation in Battelle-sponsored conferences or client meetings.
  • May participate in scientific conferences, peer review panels, and increase company visibility through publications.
  • Oversee, mentors and trains lower-level staff.

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field with 5 years of experience, or a master's degree in a related field with 2 years of experience, or a PhD; or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a related field.
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture is required. Experience with primary human cells and/or induced pluripotent cells is desired.
  • Experience with complex in-vitro models (i.e. microphysiological systems, organoids, organ on a chip) is desired.
  • Experience in at least one of the following areas is desired: safety pharmacology, environmental toxicology, hepatic and/or renal in vitro models.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD + >2 years of relevant working experience.
