Professor John Nolan, PhD, Fulbright Scholar and Chair for Human Nutrition Research at the School of Health Science, Waterford Institute of Technology, Ireland

Professor John Nolan’s research center (NRCI) studies the role of nutrition for vision, cognitive function and prevention of age-related diseases. In 2011, Prof Nolan won a prestigious European Research Council (ERC) research grant to study the impact of nutritional supplementation on visual function via two major clinical trials (CREST 281096; Central Retinal Enrichment Supplementation Trials). These trials identified how targeted nutrition can improve visual function for the general population, and for patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Current studies at the NRCI are investigating the link between nutrition and brain health and function, and over the last number of years the Nolan and team have published novel papers on how targeted nutrients enhance cognitive function for the general population and improve quality of life for patients suffering with Alzheimer’s disease. Prof Nolan has published 116 peer-reviewed scientific papers on his area of research (5849 = citations, H index = 47). A major career highlight is his role as Chair of the International Brain and Ocular Nutrition Conference (BON Conference), which is held at Downing College, Cambridge University.

Prior to becoming a consultant over 15 years ago, Jim headed up New Product Development for the world’s largest dietary supplement brand and prior to that headed up Product Development for leading companies in the dietary supplement industry, including the 12th fastest growth company in the US as well as the fastest growing network marketing company in US history. Jim is a patent holder as well as published in both scientific and lay journals, along with having taught nutrition at the university level. Jim has also helped bring new ingredients to the marketplace including helping his client win NutrAward’s Best New Ingredient. Jim’s primary focus is finding the most clinically effective ingredients, products and technologies and assisting his clients in bringing them to the marketplace.
