PepsiCo has made yet another healthy change in their products. PepsiCo. announced that it will acquire Bare Foods Co, a baked fruit and vegetable snack manufacturer that does business as Bare Snacks.
PepsiCo is adding more variety to its snack products with this acquisition. The New York-based soft drink giant says Bare Snacks’ products are made from simple ingredients. Some of their products include Fuji & Reds Apple Chips, Chia & Pineapple Chia Coconut Bites and Sea Salt Beat Chips, which are all gluten free and made with no preservatives or added oils.
“For nearly a dozen years, PepsiCo has been committed to Performance with Purpose, our vision of making more nutritious products, while also reducing added sugars, salt and saturated fat. Bare Snacks fits perfectly within that vision,” chairman and chief executive officer of PepsiCo, Indra Nooyi said.
Bare Foods is now the leader in apple, coconut and banana snacks, but had started out selling packaged apple chips in local farmers’ markets. The company was founded in 2001 by a family-owned organic apple farm located in Washington. Now, it has branched out into selling vegetable snacks and providing products that are baked and not fried. Bare Snacks plans to operate independently under PepsiCo’s Frito-Lay North America division.
This isn’t the first move PepsiCo has made in getting involved in producing healthier snacks. Earlier this year, the company launched a line of canned sparkling water beverages under its new”Bubly” brand . The 12-ounce cans come in flavours such as lemonbubly, orangebubly and applebubly. This was an important step for PepsiCo considering that research found that bottled water consumption had surpassed soda consumption as early as 2016. In fact, in 2016, PepsiCo had announced that it will reduce the sugar content in its beverages. The target was to reformulate two thirds of its soft drinks by 2025 making sure that they have fewer than 100 calories from added sugar per 12 oz. cans.
There is an increasing consumer preference for healthier snacks. In order to keep up with this change, manufacturers must try to incorporate healthier ingredients in their products. PepsiCo seems to be on the right track with this acquisition.
“We are thrilled to work with the PepsiCo team to further our mission of bringing simplicity to snacking. With a shared passion for crunchy, better-for-you snacks, PepsiCo is the right partner to help bring our simply baked fruit and vegetable snacks to even more consumers across the world and continue to grow our brand,” CEO of Bare Foods, Santosh Padki said.
