The ketogenic diet is a low-carb way of eating that involves a lot of compromises, one of those being people reducing their amount of ice cream intake. However, Enlightened, an innovator in the frozen dessert category, has introduced two new delectable keto flavors to the ice cream aisles in the supermarket.
The two keto ice creams introduced by Enlightened are Caramel Dark Chocolate Peanut and Caramel Chocolate Double Dough. These ice creams have a small amount of carbs, with each serving containing about 1g of net carbs.
The Caramel Dark Chocolate Peanut is described as “velvety caramel ice cream rolled in crushed peanuts and dipped in silky, keto-friendly chocolate to give it the perfect mix of salty and sweet that satisfies even the fiercest sweet tooth.”
“We love to push the boundaries of flavors while maintaining sound nutrition,” Enlightened CEO and founder Michael Shoretz said. “We’re excited to give fans two uniquely decadent ice creams that just happen to be ultra-low sugar and keto-friendly.”
Later in the year, keto indulging ice cream shoppers will be able to find pints in stores as part of the Keto Collection.
According to Harvard Medical School, the keto diet aims to force the body to use an alternative type of fuel. It tries to rely on the ketones in the body that are produced by the liver in stored fats. The way it does this is by limiting the carbohydrate intake and forcing the body to use the stored fats.
Nearly 20 years ago, the Atkins diet was seen as the strictest but highly-popular diet, but today the ketogenic diet is the craze that has gained popular attention and sparked scientific debate. The keto diet has been popularized in books, by celebrity promotions and on social media. Its proponents claim that it can trigger substantial weight loss and help patients with Type 2 diabetes by improving their blood sugar levels.
Part of the difficulties in the diet compared to the Atkin diet — which is a gradual change in eating habits — the keto diet demands a sudden change. This means cutting out indulging treats as part of the diet due to the amount of carbs present in these foods. Nevertheless, this has opened an opportunity for food manufacturers to get creative and create foods that accommodate the keto diet. Some companies that have jumped on this bandwagon include, Duncan Hines, Caulipower and Magic Spoon.
Caramel Dark Chocolate Peanut is now available on Enlightened’ s online site and on shelves nationally at Foodtown, Giant Eagle, HEB, Sprouts and more. Caramel Chocolate Double Dough will launch on EatEnlightened.com and at select retailers in March.
