From Prediction to Production: Machine Learning in Biopharma with Bayer’s Dr. Shyam Panjwani – Episode 269

Dr. Shyam Panjwani discussed how AI and machine learning are advancing biopharmaceutical manufacturing.

Bayer’s Dr. Shyam Panjwani highlighted how machine learning can improve process monitoring, support GMP decision-making and shape the future of biopharmaceutical manufacturing.

What if a bioreactor could signal a potential problem before laboratory testing confirmed it? Machine learning is helping biopharmaceutical manufacturers turn process data into insights and more informed decisions.

In this episode of the Xtalks Life Science Podcast, host Soumya Shashikumar spoke with Shyam Panjwani, PhD, Senior Principal Data Scientist at Bayer, about the practical applications of AI and machine learning in biologics manufacturing.

Dr. Panjwani explained how predictive models can use cell culture measurements, including pH, temperature and metabolite concentrations, to anticipate product potency and identify changes in process performance. He also discussed models that help scientists evaluate viral clearance conditions before narrowing down which experiments to conduct in the laboratory.

He also described how bringing information together from disconnected laboratory and production systems remains difficult, especially when metadata are missing or terminology differs across products. -Moving from process development to commercial manufacturing requires reliable data, validation and tools that operators can understand and trust. As Dr. Panjwani emphasized, a digital assistant supports human decisions rather than making them independently.

The conversation also explored the potential of generative AI to streamline documentation and technology transfer, alongside longer-term possibilities for more automated manufacturing.

Listen to the full episode to hear how data science could help biopharmaceutical teams improve process monitoring, efficiency and decision-making while meeting the demands of regulated manufacturing.
