Google Reveals Top Trending Recipes of 2022

Topping the list of searched recipes is “sugo,” a traditional Italian tomato sauce.

At the end of each year, Google publishes its annual “Year in Search” results, summarizing the year’s most popular searches in various categories. While not all searches were food related — meaning the top overall searches were terms like “Wordle,” “Election results,” and “Betty White” — the digital platform broke down the top trending recipes of 2022.

Google’s Top 10 Trending Recipes of 2022

Topping the list of searched recipes is “sugo,” a traditional Italian tomato sauce typically made with tomatoes, basil, olive oil, onions and garlic. Along with sugo, the top trending recipes of 2022 included:

  1. “Sugo,”
  2. “Cincinnati chili,”
  3. “Marry me chicken,”
  4. “Quick pancake,”
  5. “Mango pie,”
  6. “Green goddess salad,”
  7. “Jennifer Aniston salad,”
  8. “Grinder sandwich,”
  9. “Bella Hadid sandwich” and
  10. “The Bear spaghetti.”

Many of the searches on the list seemed to have taken their cue from popular culture. For example, the “Bella Hadid sandwich” went viral on TikTok and is a recipe from the model. The hearty sandwich consists of turkey, salami, provolone, tomatoes and roughly a dozen other ingredients. And thanks to the success of the FX series The Bear, “The Bear spaghetti” closed out the list at number 10.

Google also broke out the data for TikTok-inspired recipe searches, and though some overlap did exist further down the list, TikTok users largely searched for different recipes than Google users. Searches for “cloud bread” topped the TikTok-specific list, followed by “baked oats,” “charcuterie boards,” “pasta chips,” and “mug cake,” which rounded out the top five.

Google’s Top 10 Alcoholic Drinks of 2022

In the beverage department, “Aperol spritz” surged to the top of alcoholic drinks searches, managing to hold off number two, “espresso martini.” The top ten alcoholic drinks searches were:

  1. “Aperol spritz,”
  2. “Espresso martini,”
  3. “Dirty Shirley,”
  4. “Cosmopolitan,”
  5. “Negroni,”
  6. “Dirty martini,”
  7. “Hot toddy,”
  8. “Lemon drop martini,”
  9. “Mai tai” and
  10. “Pina colada.”

Non-alcoholic drinks also continued to rise in popularity throughout 2022. Google saw users seeking out alcohol-free versions of several classics, including “non-alcoholic rum,” which topped the list, followed by non-alcoholic “mint julep,” “red wine,” “tequila,” “vodka,” “beers,” “margarita,” “mulled wine,” “whiskey,” and “pina colada.”

Google’s Year in Search 2022 also proved that various food shortages were heavy on the minds of many Americans. “Baby formula shortage” came in at number two in the “Shortages” category of search terms. “Sriracha shortage,” was fifth on the list, followed by “food shortage,” “cream cheese shortage,” “avocado shortage,” and “lettuce shortage.”

The ongoing economic upheaval also meant that several related searches landed on lists that weren’t specifically related to food and beverages. For example, also under searches for shortages, “diesel,” “tampon,” “Adderall,” and “epidural” all made the top ten. And though “gas” topped the list of people searching why things are so expensive, “eggs,” “saffron” and “lettuce” all also made the top ten.

Alongside its Year in Search, Google also released a “Holiday 100” list, which ranks Google’s best gift ideas based on the most common searches users made in 2022. Of the 100 most searched for gifts, six of them were kitchen appliances. Topping the list was the Dash Mini Waffle Maker, followed by the Instant Vortex Plus 6-Quart Air Fryer, the Dash Mini Rice Cooker, the Ooni Koda 12-Gas Pizza Oven, the Breville Compact Smart Toaster Oven and the Fellow Stagg EKG Electric Gooseneck Kettle.
