Job Description

This position supports "Essex, an Emmes Company". Essex is a biomedical informatics and health information technology-focused consultancy founded in 2009 and headquartered in Rockville, MD. The Essex team comprises experts with extensive experience in strategically developing and managing complex health and biomedical information programs for clients in the Federal Government, research academia, and private sectors.

 

The Computation Biologist I / Bioinformatician will be part of a fast-paced, cross-functional team of biologists, computational biologists, bioinformaticians, and software developers working at the leading-edge of precision medicine, biomedical research and healthcare IT. The Computation Biologist I will work with Senior Computational Biologists and Software Engineers to develop novel tools for the analysis, standardization, storage and distribution of biomedical data.

 

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design, testing, validation and deployment of bioinformatic analysis pipelines.
  • Contribute to biomedical data curation, data standardization and data modelling.
  • Provide subject matter expertise on bioinformatic analyses and techniques, including the use of AI/ML techniques.
  • Create novel bioinformatic tools and software and/or modify existing tools to address biomedical research needs.
  • Work with various Federal clients to improve analysis ecosystems, improve cross-platform interoperability and increase the value and availability of biomedical data.

Qualifications

  • At least a bachelors; preferred masters degree, in biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science or related field.
  • Strong understanding of the biology underlying bioinformatic applications and techniques.
  • Proficient in scripting languages (Perl, Python etc.) and workflow management software (e.g., Snakemake, Nextflow, WDL). Understanding of data modeling tools and languages (such as graphQL) is a plus.
  • An understanding of biological data modelling, data standardization and data harmonization approaches, with a preference for experience in the use of AI/ML in these applications.
  • Familiarity with code versioning software and deployment/maintenance of production-level bioinformatic code.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, exemplified by a track-record of peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, independent funding etc.…
