Internship - Bioinformatics
Position Purpose:
A bioinformatics intern is responsible for contributing to bioinformatics tool installation, computational benchmarking, results interpretation and documentation, and data analysis implementation for large, high-throughput genomic experiments, with a focus on human forensics and pathogen identification and characterization.

Position Purpose:
A bioinformatics intern is responsible for contributing to bioinformatics tool installation, computational benchmarking, results interpretation and documentation, and data analysis implementation for large, high-throughput genomic experiments, with a focus on human forensics and pathogen identification and characterization.
Position Location and Duration
- This position can be performed remotely or onsite at the Signature Science office in Austin, TX or Charlottesville, VA.
- This internship position offers 29 hours per week starting on Tuesday, May 26, 2026 and ending on Friday, July 24, 2026.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Evaluate open-source bioinformatics tools for the analysis and interpretation of high-density microarray and whole genome sequencing data.
- Manage, manipulate, analyze data in Linux environments.
- Identify domain-specific open-source software and tools to manipulate and analyze genomic data.
- Conduct workflow benchmarking and documentation, identifying inconsistencies and resolving data problems.
- Prepare SOPs, document source code/workflows, and write reports to summarize computational requirements, processing status, and customized analysis results.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Proficiency working in a Unix/Linux environment.
- Proficiency with open-source bioinformatics software, tools, and databases for analyzing nucleotide sequencing datasets.
- Proficiency using version Control software (e.g., Git or similar) to manage programming code.
- Proficiency with Python or another scripting language.
Education/Experience:
- Enrolled in or completed Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Computer Science, or related degree.
- Experience managing, analyzing, and interpreting large-scale datasets produced by modern sequencing platforms.
Clearance:
- It is preferable that the candidate be willing and able to complete a successful background screening for a security clearance.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None
Working Conditions/ Equipment:
- The candidate should have the ability to work during regular business hours and attend virtual meetings.
- Work is expected to take place in traditional office environments with sedentary extended periods required for code development and testing.
