Job Summary:

Responsible for providing quality, proficient and professional laboratory service in a critical access hospital and outpatient setting. Collect and process specimens using appropriate technique. Perform testing and verify assay/analyzer performance. Responsible for testing in any of the following areas: hematology, coagulation, microbiology, chemistry, urinalysis and transfusion medicine. Document and communicate laboratory test results thoroughly and accurately. Perform and document assay/analyzer maintenance.

Responsibilities include:

  • Responsible to proper specimen collection and handling, blood and non-blood specimens
  • Responsible for following processing specimens and ordering laboratory testing
  • Performs analytical testing according to policies, procedures and federal regulations including OSHA, COLA, CLIA, and HIPAA
  • Evaluates results for accuracy and resolves complex test problems
  • Provides results in LIS and over the phone
  • Performs and documents routine and advanced instrument maintenance and quality control; takes appropriate remedial action
  • Ensures appropriate record keeping and retention
  • Stocks, rotates and requests supplies on a regular basis
  • Participates in the development of technical procedures, forms, miscellaneous documents, method validation, and implementation of new technologies
  • Maintains safety, education and competency requirements
  • CLIA defined responsibilities
  • May have oversight as a key operator of a work area and participates in the development of technical procedures, forms, misc.
  • Responsible for acquiring and maintaining CPR certification
  • DOT certification may be required
  • Trains students and new employees
  • Other duties may be assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge in laboratory tests and specimen requirements
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment and how to operate
  • Knowledge of and adherence to HIPAA and safety guidelines
  • Skill in basic laboratory techniques
  • Skill in verbal and written communication
  • Skill in computer functions
  • Ability to function with multiple priorities and interruptions
  • Ability to follow written and verbal guidelines to obtain specimens and perform procedures/testing

Physical Requirements for the Role:
  • Ability to lift/push/pull 50 lbs
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods, frequently bend/stoop and walking, reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive)
  • Repetitive motion including but not limited to computer keyboarding

Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in a lab science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution
  • Possess or is eligible to receive appropriate HHS approved laboratory certification (ASCP or AMT). If not certified, must obtain certification within 180 days.

Work Environment:

  • May be exposed to chemicals, cold, dust, noise, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.
