The Patient Financial Counselor works with patients and guarantors to accept and collect payments; makes payment arrangements based on policies and procedures and the patient's ability to pay; provides financial assistance options for self-pay, assist patients with cost estimates, and to collaborate with payers to ensure patient financial coverage; explains financial information, determines prospective patients' ability to pay, provides education on free health care and Medicaid; educates patients on their financial obligations to the facility, and follows up with patients and other parties to ensure accuracy and completeness of the information.
Typical Schedule
Full-time Monday thru Friday - daytime hours

Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
- Experience in a clinic and/or hospital setting, preferred.
- Experience in working with insurance posting, collections, and patient payments, preferred.
- Customer service experience, preferred.
Responsibilities include:
- Answers incoming phone calls to Patient Financial Services.
- Assists patients and resolve billing issues. Identifies and monitors delinquent accounts.
- Obtains payment for all charges by following up with patient using various methods of communication.
- Sets up payment plans with patients. Forwards non-responsive accounts to collections.
- Remains up-to-date and knowledgeable about collections and insurance information through seminars and insurance bulletins or websites.
- Monitors age of accounts. Obtains payment for all charges by making phone calls and sending letters or statements.
- Maintains accurate records.
- Completes estate filing and follows up on bankruptcy.
- Reviews, reconciles, investigates and resolves account discrepancies. Determines refunds if applicable.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Demonstrates OMC's behavioral standards and values in daily work.
- Knowledge of collections, collection laws, policies and procedures.
- Understanding of healthcare billing and reimbursement practices.
- Knowledge of patient registration and scheduling.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and health insurance.
- Strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills.

- Developing and maintaining effective relationships with partners inside and outside the organization.
- Examine documents for accuracy and completeness.
