Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Metabolomics/Lipidomics Scientist will have extensive experience in metabolite and/or small molecule analysis using LC/MS and LC/MS/MS platforms. The scientist will perform targeted and nontargeted bioanalysis and develop novel methods to support the platform.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the full spectrum of activities involved in metabolomics/lipidomics analysis as a member of the team including the following:
  • Conceptualize, perform, analyze and report experiments.
  • Perform mass spectrometry-based assays and studies focused on metabolite analysis of diverse samples from the biological matrices.
  • Laboratory analytical instrumentation routine maintenance.
  • Daily QA/QC, system suitability testing, method development and validated SOP implementation
  • Develop SOPs.
  • Manage external collaborations.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Requires a M.S. (with 5+ years of experience) or Ph.D. (with 1+ years of experience) in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field in the analysis of small molecules and metabolites by mass spectrometry.
  • Broad understanding of metabolomics/lipidomics applications and biochemistry in the areas of systems biology, neurodegeneration, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and cancer is a plus.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot common instrumentation-related issues, specifically for HPLC and MS systems.
  • Experience with common sample preparation techniques, including solid phase extraction (SPE), liquid-liquid extraction and protein precipitation for biofluids, tissues and cells.
  • Deep understanding of core HPLC and MS concepts, including (but not limited to) principles of reversed-phase LC and HILIC, high-resolution/accurate mass strategies, structural elucidation by MS/MS, isotope dilution, isotopologue identification, multiple-charged ions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills combined with a proven track record of technical and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to work in a team-oriented environment and demonstrate attention to detail and record-keeping. Must demonstrate fully professional level requiring independent work in metabolomics research and development.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required for preparation of reports to management.
  • Ability to prepare manuscripts for presentation, publication in scientific journals, and regulatory requirements is preferred.
