Specialty Pharmacy Technician

A Specialty Pharmacy Technician is responsible for contributing to efficient and effective pharmacy operations, including but not limited to:
  • Following all Company SOPs, federal, state, and local laws, regulations, professional standards, and ethics - including any Company employee agreements.
  • Complying with all relevant pharmacy accreditation standards.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of all patient and Company information (HIPAA compliance required).
  • Adhering to pharmacy workflow procedures at each assigned task station.
  • Supporting a high-performing team by taking initiative, improving patient care, and being receptive to feedback.
  • Remaining flexible for scheduling and business needs.
Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Manager/Director, Pharmacy Manager, or Staff Pharmacist:
  • Handle telephone calls that do not require the pharmacist's direct attention
  • Gather and complete patient information profiles accurately
  • Verify insurance and benefits eligibility, including copay assistance or other aid programs, and guide patients accordingly
  • Triage prescriptions appropriately to internal and external providers
  • Manage patient documents promptly and accurately
  • Enter prescription data accurately into pharmacy software systems
  • Identify payer types and requirements based on insurance information
  • Determine payer requirements such as Prior Authorization, Step Therapy, and Specialty Drug restrictions
  • Use prescriber, insurance, and pharmacy portals to enhance communication
  • Troubleshoot and resolve claim issues, including managing a portfolio of rejected claims, with working knowledge of Medicare Part D and other third-party plans
  • Ensure timely billing, including completing and submitting prior authorization forms
  • Stay current on payer policies, program changes, and financial assistance resources
  • Communicate and collaborate with prescribers and their staff regarding prescription needs, financial assistance, or prior authorizations
  • Fill prescriptions by retrieving, counting, and pouring medications (as required)
  • Assist with inventory management, including ordering, unpacking, and receiving medication shipments
  • Perform general administrative duties such as filing, returning calls, and assisting in-person customers
  • Verify and collect payment information pertaining to patients shipment.
  • Duties and responsibilities may vary based on business needs, state board of pharmacy regulations, licensure requirements, accreditation standards, and the state in which the employee is licensed and/or physically performing work.

Required Qualifications
  • State-level licensure and national certification as required by the home state and state board of pharmacy
  • Regular and predictable attendance, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to complete required training within designated timeframes
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service in person and over the phone, demonstrating compassion and empathy
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to read, write, speak, and understand English
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and pivot quickly between tasks
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Basic math and analytical skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Teams) and ability to produce departmental reports as needed

Preferred Qualifications
  • 1-3 years of experience as a Pharmacy Technician
  • Previous experience in a pharmacy or medical setting
  • Previous customer service or retail experience

  • May sit or stand 7-10 hours per day
  • May occasionally need to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, bend, or walk
  • May be required to work extended hours as needed
  • May lift and/or move up to 30 pounds
  • Must be able to function in typical pharmacy work environments
  • Must pass background and drug test
