Nestlé to Create All Three Essentials of a Vegan Bacon Cheeseburger

Nestlé debuting first-ever vegan bacon cheeseburger.

On Wednesday, Nestlé announced that they have developed vegan alternatives to cheese and bacon that are designed to compliment their plant-based burger patties, sold under the Awesome Burger brand. They are the first food and beverage company to develop and produce the essentials in making a vegan bacon cheeseburger. Nestle calls this product the “PB triple play.”

The complete triple play will first be offered to restaurants and food service operators. The plant-based burger patties and full packaging are already available to food professionals, with the cheese and bacon to follow next year.

Nestlé is intending to deliver a burger to consumers who want to reduce their meat intake and incorporate a more plant-based diet without having to restrict themselves from flavors they enjoy.

“We have now raised the bar by developing a ‘PB triple play’ of ingredients for an all-time classic: the bacon cheeseburger. We’re continuing to make good on our promise to offer consumers food that is right for them and right for the planet,” said Nestlé CEO Mark Schneider.

The vegan cheese developed by Nestlé mimics the real deal. They have created a cheese that has a similar texture, meltability and rich taste of dairy cheese. The vegan bacon is also crispy and chewy when cooked and is associated with a satisfying flavor, similar to animal-based bacon. The plant-based bacon cheeseburger is lower in fat and saturated fat, free of cholesterol and has a higher fiber content compared to a standard bacon cheeseburger.

The ingredients of the vegan cheese and bacon use a combination of plant-based proteins, fibers and oils. These products complement Nestlé’s Sweet Earth Food, Awesome Burger, which is a plant based burger that they launched earlier this month.

Nestlé also has a variety of vegan sauces that could be added to create a complete plant-based burger experience.

All these developments play a major role in achieving Nestlé’s zero net greenhouse gas emissions goal by 2050.
