Pediatric Clinical Networks, Pharma and CROs Working Together for Success in Pediatric Clinical Trials

The speakers will present the various types of pediatric clinical networks that are available (Europe and the US) and the functions that they are able to provide. Some networks can provide access to parent and young person’s groups and we will talk about the potential benefits of obtaining this type of feedback.

The speakers will also explain the role of the European network of Paediatric Research at the EMA (EnprEMA) and young person’s groups such as KIDS (Kids and Families Impacting Disease through Science) and iCAN (International Children’s Advisory Network) and finally describe the advantages to industry to be gained by involving networks.

Speakers

Susan P. Tansey, MD, Medical Director, Paediatrics, Premier Research

Dr. Susan P. Tansey, specialty areas include vaccines, cardiovascular, and oncology, although her initial training was in neonatology and pediatric medicine. She has considerable experience in pediatric clinical research and trial design. Dr. Tansey’s expertise in developing detailed clinical development strategies in the pediatric therapeutic field will further strengthen a Premier Research team that brings to the table a wealth of experience in rare disease and pediatric research. Dr. Tansey has considerable international experience in the Pharmaceutical industry, having joined Premier Research from TMC Pharma Services Limited, where she was director of medical services. She previously had held research positions at Pfizer, Wyeth Research, and Servier R&D.

Charles A. Thompson, MD, FAPP, Global Lead, Pediatric Center of Excellence, Pfizer

Charlie is a board-certified pediatrician who earned his M.D. at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and completed his pediatric residency at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford. He is a Clinical Instructor of Pediatrics at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and is a member of the medical staff at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.

Currently, Charlie is the Global Lead for the Pfizer Pediatric Center of Excellence recently transitioning from a decade as a field medical director in vaccines and infectious diseases. Throughout his 18 year career at Pfizer, Charlie has taken on diverse roles in clinical development, clinical safety/risk management, and medical affairs. Charlie is also the Chair of the Executive Committee for the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Advances in Therapeutics and Technology, a member of the Board of Directors for the Hezekiah Beardsley Connecticut Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Lead for KIDS (Kids and Families Impacting Disease through Science) and iCAN (International Children’s Advisory Network), and a Steering Committee Member for the Global Alliance for Pediatric Therapeutics, a pre-competitive public/private partnership to advance the development of medicines for children. He is serving his second term as a governor-appointed member of the Connecticut Pharmaceutical and Therapeutics committee and recently served on the State of Connecticut Immunization Task Force following an appointment by the Speaker of the House. In his community, Charlie is a medical advisor and former board member of the Connecticut Make-A-Wish Foundation, a youth basketball and baseball coach and a scout leader.
