September 29 is World Heart Day 2024, an initiative by the World Heart Federation to raise awareness about cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and the importance of heart health.
As one of the leading causes of death globally, CVDs claim over 20 million lives each year. Despite this, many countries fail to prioritize heart health, with national strategies often lacking or entirely absent.
World Heart Day emphasizes the importance of equal access to healthcare and heart disease prevention strategies. In many parts of the world, socioeconomic barriers prevent individuals from receiving the medical care they need to maintain a healthy heart.
World Heart Day 2024: Use Heart for Action
The World Heart Federation has launched a new three-year World Heart Day campaign from 2024 to 2026 with the theme “Use Heart for Action.” The campaign is dedicated to supporting individuals in caring for their heart health while empowering them to advocate for cardiovascular health as a global priority.
The initiative provides a platform for driving impactful action, focusing on deliberate, meaningful efforts across two critical areas: influencing policies and promoting behavior change, such as increasing physical activity.
The campaign aims to inspire countries to develop or enhance their national cardiovascular health plans — a crucial step in preventing the world’s number one killer. It underscores the need for sustained collaboration and long-term commitment to achieve lasting results.
As part of the multi-year campaign, a petition aims to collect over 1 million signatures to promote cardiovascular health and save lives. Specifically, the petition calls on all governments and decision makers to implement an action plan “to defeat the world’s biggest killer.”
This petition is to advocate for access to diagnosis, care and prevention of heart disease, as well as stronger heart health policies to help save lives.
World Heart Day is being supported by big names in pharma, including Eli Lilly, Boehringer Ingelheim, Novo Nordisk and Amgen.

Global Impact and Initiatives
In many countries, non-communicable diseases like heart disease pose a significant burden on healthcare systems. By investing in heart health initiatives, countries can reduce the strain on hospitals, improve overall health outcomes and increase life expectancy.
World Heart Day is a global movement, with campaigns in over 100 countries promoting heart health through community events, educational programs and social media outreach. Governments and organizations are encouraged to prioritize heart health through policies, funding and health initiatives that reach underserved communities.
Why Heart Health Matters
Cardiovascular diseases encompass a range of conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels, including coronary artery disease, heart attacks, strokes and hypertension. Risk factors such as unhealthy diets, lack of physical activity, tobacco use and harmful alcohol consumption contribute to the risk of heart disease.
Maintaining Good Heart Health Is Critical for a Number of Reasons:
Maintaining good heart health not only prevents serious conditions but also improves overall well-being. Here are a few key reasons why focusing on heart health is so important:
- Heart disease is preventable: Up to 80 percent of premature deaths from heart disease and stroke can be avoided by controlling risk factors like smoking, poor diet and physical inactivity.
- A healthy heart equals a longer life: Proper heart health reduces the risk of heart attacks and strokes, leading to longer and healthier lives.
- Heart disease affects everyone: Regardless of age, gender or location, heart disease can impact anyone. This is why raising awareness and promoting heart-healthy habits is essential.
Steps to Improve Heart Health
Protecting heart health doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are a few simple, effective ways to help maintain heart health:
- Eat a balanced diet: Incorporate fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins into meals while reducing salt, sugar and unhealthy fats.
- Stay active: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week, whether it’s walking, jogging, swimming or cycling.
- Quit smoking: Smoking is a major risk factor for heart disease. Quitting can significantly reduce the risk, no matter how long someone has smoked.
- Monitor health: Regularly monitoring blood pressure, cholesterol levels and blood sugar is important. Early detection of potential heart issues can lead to more effective treatment.
Manage stress: Chronic stress can negatively affect heart health. Practicing mindfulness, meditation or engaging in relaxing hobbies can help alleviate stress.
World Heart Day 2024: How You Can Participate
There are several ways to get involved in World Heart Day 2024:
- Join a local event: Many communities organize walks, health screenings and seminars on heart health. Participating in these events offers an opportunity to learn more and spread the message of heart health.
- Use social media: Share heart health tips, statistics and stories using hashtags like #WorldHeartDay and #HeartHealthForAll to help raise awareness online.
- Make a pledge: Commit to improving heart health by adopting heart-friendly habits like eating better, exercising regularly and quitting smoking.
- Advocacy: Advocate for better heart health policies through petitions, writing to government and healthcare officials to demand better access to and quality of care for all individuals.
World Heart Day 2024 is a reminder of the importance of heart health and the steps people can take to protect their heart health and improve overall well-being.
The ongoing World Heart Day campaign encourages governments, healthcare systems and individuals to work together to break down barriers to heart care to achieve better and timely diagnoses, improved access to treatments and investments into research for new and improved treatments.
