Weight-loss medications work only while patients keep taking them. The real goal is staying on medication long enough to achieve meaningful, functional weight loss and sustain it. This webinar explores why that’s harder than it sounds: not for the clinical reasons often expected, but rather because of the beliefs and psychology, including the significance of volitional medication use in obesity, that predict who stays engaged and who drops off before seeing the long-term benefits.

For pharma professionals supporting an obesity portfolio, that gap is an important challenge to address. Clinical trials show sustained weight reduction of 15–22% over 72 weeks, but real-world discontinuation can be up to 67% within 12 months. Side effects, cost and access explain only part of that drop-off. Most support programs have no validated way to identify behavioral risk before it impacts success.

Psychological factors, such as confidence, doubt and treatment identity, are increasingly recognized as independent predictors of discontinuation. Underlying motivations and beliefs about treatment, whether rooted in appearance, day-to-day function or long-term health risk, differ from patient to patient. The featured speakers will discuss findings from a novel study of 1,056 US adults using a GLP-1/GIP medication for weight management, evaluated using the SPUR behavioral framework alongside validated belief and mental-health measures. Dr. Christian Born Djurhuus brings nearly three decades of experience in cardiometabolic drug development and digital transformation. In his capacity as CSO, Dr. Djurhuus focuses on advancing Clinical Ink’s industry leading offerings supporting cardiometabolic drug development. In his role as EVP, Disease Management, he oversees the creation and delivery of disease management and health management products designed to support patients receiving FDA approved therapies, while strengthening evidence generation for biopharma partners.

Prior to joining Clinical ink, Dr. Djurhuus held multiple senior leadership roles at Novo Nordisk. Most recently, he served as Corporate Vice President, Process Transformation & Digitalization, Global Trial Portfolio, where he was responsible for decentralized clinical trial strategies and patient facing technologies. He previously served as Chief Digital Officer and as Vice President of Medical Science, with responsibility for global development programs in the cardiometabolic therapeutic area.

Dr. Djurhuus holds an MD in Medicine and a PhD in Endocrinology and Metabolism from the University of Aarhus, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Informatics. His background uniquely combines deep scientific expertise with digital innovation, enabling him to advance solutions that deliver meaningful impact for patients and sponsors alike.

Nicholas Alp has more than 30 years of clinical research experience as an academic Cardiologist, Clinical Trialist and Commercial Drug Development Expert. Before joining Clinical ink, he was Senior Vice President and Head of Cardiometabolic Research at Medpace, a global clinical research organization. Previously, Nicholas was Vice President and Global Head of Cardiovascular Drug Development at ICON. He also held appointments as a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford and a senior academic appointment in Cardiovascular Medicine at Oxford University.

Nicholas trained in Medicine at London University and Oxford University, completed a PhD in Immunology at Cambridge University, with a further Post-Doctoral DM degree in Cardiology at Oxford University. He has also contributed to more than 70 peer-reviewed publications and books.
