We are excited to spotlight Xtalks Featured Community Member Mohammad Ahsan Fuzail, Senior Engineer I, Automation at Lila Sciences, Inc., whose work sits at the intersection of AI, laboratory automation and scientific discovery. He shares his research and engineering achievements, why polymerase chain reaction remains his favorite life science innovation and how open-source technologies could help lower barriers to scientific exploration.
What Are Your Proudest Life Science Achievements?
My proudest achievements include making significant contributions to and earning third authorship on a Nature publication; earning first authorship of a technical paper; delivering my first industry talk at SLAS 2026; winning the AI+LabAutomation Hackathon in July 2025; and contributing to efforts supporting shingles vaccine work for the Serum Institute of India and GreenLight Biosciences.
What Are Your Day-to-Day Job Highlights?
My day-to-day highlights include exploring emerging technologies and capabilities at the bleeding edge of AI and laboratory automation. Being surrounded by humans and robots that enable scientific exploration all day long is a unique privilege.
What Are Your Favorite Life Science Innovations?
My favorite life science innovation is, quite simply, PCR, or polymerase chain reaction. It is very emblematic of what it means to be human: we may not always have the answer, and it may not always be the complete answer. But by harnessing nature and our natural world (Taq polymerase), we can lower obstacles we can’t even imagine existing when we start. “Ad Astra” is right here on Earth!
What Is Your Vision for the Future of the Industry?
I envision the continued emergence and increased adoption of open-source techniques, technologies and approaches that lower barriers to entry for people around the world to explore science the way it was always meant to be.
