Healthcare Layoffs 2026: A Running Roundup

Healthcare Layoffs 2026, Healthcare Layoffs

Early 2026 layoffs point to structural pressure across healthcare, particularly among systems serving low-income populations and publicly insured patients.

In 2026, we are seeing a mixed picture of the labor market. According to a comprehensive recent report, US employers announced 108,435 layoffs in January 2026 alone, which is the highest January total since 2009 and more than double the level reported a year earlier. Planned hiring also fell to its lowest January level on record.

Data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics showed that healthcare employment was still growing toward the end of 2025, but at a slower pace than earlier in the year. Against that backdrop, some healthcare organizations entered 2026 cutting staff as they worked to control costs and adjust operations.

Last year, employers including CVS Health and multiple hospital systems announced layoffs affecting hundreds to thousands of roles, often citing reimbursement pressure and rising operating costs. Below, we track confirmed healthcare layoffs announced in 2026.

Hazel Health Layoffs 2026

Hazel Health laid off 135 employees in February 2026, including clinicians, marking its second round of cuts in four months. The K-12 healthcare startup cited financial and operational sustainability challenges and said clinicians with smaller caseloads were impacted to limit patient disruption.

Erie County Medical Center (ECMC) Layoffs 2026

Erie County Medical Center said it would cut about 3% of its workforce and impose a one-week unpaid furlough for management staff in 2026. The reductions, largely non-clinical, were attributed to rising costs, inadequate reimbursement and increased payment denials.

Valley Medical Group Layoffs 2026

Valley Medical Group laid off 41 employees in January 2026, representing about 10% of its workforce. The independent primary care group cited longstanding financial pressures. No practitioners were affected, and leadership said the cuts were necessary to maintain clinical operations.

Hennepin Healthcare Layoffs 2026

Hennepin Healthcare announced plans to permanently lay off about 100 employees by March 2026 as it consolidates services at its Minneapolis campus. The health system cited a roughly $50 million budget shortfall and significant projected losses from uncompensated care and Medicaid revenue. The hospital is also removing 100 inpatient beds and reducing certain programs to stabilize operations.

Teton Valley Health Care Layoffs 2026

Teton Valley Health Care laid off 26 employees in January 2026 and confirmed plans to close its infusion clinic. The rural health system cited declining insurance reimbursements and rising costs, saying the cuts were necessary to preserve core services amid mounting financial strain.

Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center Layoffs 2026

Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center will eliminate 265 positions effective March 8, 2026. The cuts follow a reported $40 million revenue loss in 2025 tied to reduced federal and state health funding. The reductions span management, clinical and non-clinical roles, including registered nurses.

  • Alameda Health System confirmed plans to eliminate 247 positions across its five public hospitals in early 2026. Officials said layoffs affect multiple departments, prompting concerns about impacts on care for low-income communities.
  • As of March 2026, Alameda Health System planned layoffs affecting up to 188 positions in 2026 as it faces major funding reductions tied to federal healthcare spending changes. In March, county officials and the hospital system agreed to temporarily pause the layoffs while exploring alternatives to reduce the budget gap.

The system said no core clinical services or essential community-based programs were eliminated.

Boulder City Hospital Layoffs 2026

Baystate Health Layoffs 2026

Baystate Health announced in February 2026 that it reduced 117 corporate positions, representing less than 1% of its workforce, as part of an effort to improve efficiency. The system said the cuts primarily affected corporate functions, while clinical engineering services will transition to an external partner.

Franciscan Health Olympia Fields Hospital Layoffs 2026

Franciscan Health issued WARN notices affecting 1,930 employees at its Olympia Fields hospital in Illinois as part of a transition of ownership to Prime Healthcare. ECU Health Layoffs 2026

Sodexo/HCA Houston Hospital Food Service Layoffs 2026

Sodexo filed a WARN notice affecting approximately 296 food and nutrition workers at HCA Houston Healthcare facilities, with the change expected to take effect June 13, 2026. Although the change was reported as a layoff, HCA said affected workers were offered the chance to continue in their roles as HCA employees.

UCI Health Layoffs 2026

UCI Health said in March 2026 that a strategic restructuring will affect about 1% of its workforce. More than 70% of the layoffs are expected to involve non-patient-facing roles, according to the health system, which said the realignment is intended to support changing community care needs.

Blount Memorial Hospital Layoffs 2026

Blount Memorial Hospital filed a WARN notice in March 2026 for a permanent layoff of 85 employees effective May 1. The Tennessee hospital did not provide additional details in the filing about the roles affected or the reason for the workforce reduction.

Chatham-Kent Health Alliance said in April 2026 that it will eliminate 49 positions as part of a financial recovery plan to address an estimated $5 million deficit. TouchPoint Support Services and Compass Group USA issued notices affecting 262 employees tied to Beacon Health System operations in southwest Michigan. HCA Healthcare laid off a “small portion” of its workforce in May 2026, affecting employees in non-direct patient care roles. The Nashville-based, for-profit hospital system did not disclose the number of positions affected, but said it is supporting impacted workers and helping connect them with other roles where possible.

Asante Layoffs 2026

Asante could eliminate 300 or more roles in the coming months as the Southern Oregon health system works to address a projected $50 million budget shortfall in 2027. Non-clinical roles are expected to face heavy cuts, with patient-facing positions remaining a priority. Asante cited rising costs, Medicaid-related pressures and operating losses across three campuses.

INTEGRIS Health Layoffs 2026

INTEGRIS Health is preparing to reduce parts of its workforce and close some clinics over the next three to six months as the Oklahoma health system braces for expected Medicaid and Medicare funding cuts. The organization said the changes include service line adjustments within INTEGRIS Health Medical Group, with some physicians and caregivers expected to be affected. INTEGRIS estimates the funding changes could reduce its annual net revenue by about $130 million once fully implemented.

Mad River Community Hospital Layoffs 2026

Mad River Community Hospital has confirmed recent workforce reductions as the rural California hospital faces financial and operational pressure. At least 15 people have been laid off or had contracts end in recent months, though hospital administrators have not confirmed an exact number. The reductions are meant to be part of efforts to preserve local access to care.

UnityPoint Health Layoffs 2026

UnityPoint Health will eliminate 207 information technology positions later in 2026 and plans additional cuts in its revenue cycle department as it outsources those functions. The West Des Moines-based nonprofit health system said the restructuring is intended to reduce costs, use advanced technology and limit the impact on direct patient care.

Greenwood Leflore Hospital Layoffs 2026

Greenwood Leflore Hospital warned employees of potential mass layoffs as the Mississippi Delta facility prepares for a possible June 15 closure while continuing talks with a larger health system. The 35-bed public hospital had already announced layoffs affecting 86 employees, including 46 full-time and 40 part-time positions, along with several clinic and service line closures. Hospital leaders said the WARN notice does not mean closure is certain. The facility is still exploring options to stay open, including a possible transfer to the University of Mississippi Medical Center or Chapter 9 bankruptcy, a form of bankruptcy used by public entities such as municipal hospitals.

Resilience Healthcare/West Suburban Medical Center Layoffs 2026

Resilience Healthcare laid off 670 workers in March 2026 after closing down the West Suburban Medical Center, a 234-bed safety-net hospital in Oak Park, Illinois. The hospital’s parent company cited major billing problems tied to a new electronic medical records system, saying the issue left the facility operating on only a fraction of its expected revenue. Resilience said it is working to recover revenue and hopes to reopen the hospital. The closure has also raised legal questions about whether employees received the 60-day advance notice generally required for large layoffs under the WARN Act.

Baptist Health Fort Smith Layoffs 2026

Baptist Health is laying off 150 employees at its Fort Smith campus in Arkansas as the health system restructures operations after years of financial losses. The system said its Fort Smith location has recorded $127 million in cumulative losses since Baptist Health entered the River Valley in 2018, with pressures expected to grow in 2026 due to lower reimbursements and rising operating costs. Ten physicians are among those affected, while inpatient nephrology, pulmonary, oncology and infectious disease services, along with several regional clinics, are set to close over the next 60 days.

Healthcare Services & Payers

Noridian Healthcare Solutions Layoffs 2026

Noridian Healthcare Solutions laid off 143 employees in January 2026, representing about 7% of its workforce. Affected employees include staff across the organization, with 39 based in the Fargo-Moorhead area.

Point32Health Layoffs 2026

Point32Health announced plans in March 2026 to lay off about 100 employees, or roughly 2.3% of its workforce, as part of a restructuring across select departments. The insurer reported a $301 million operating loss in 2025, citing rising medical and pharmacy costs.

Cigna Layoffs 2026

Walgreens announced layoffs affecting 628 employees across Illinois and Texas in February 2026, following its acquisition by private equity firm Sycamore Partners. The cuts include administrative roles, four licensed therapists and staff who support people leaving psychiatric hospitals, as well as clients receiving trauma-related services. The center is also closing some programs, including short-term housing for people transitioning out of psychiatric care and services for refugees and immigrants who have experienced human trafficking.

Community Counseling of Bristol County filed notice of 52 layoffs, while Innovative Care Partners filed notice of 70 layoffs across western Massachusetts.

Laurel Ridge Treatment Center Layoffs 2026

Laurel Ridge Treatment Center in San Antonio notified staff that 648 employees will be laid off effective June 26, 2026, after a federal decision affected its Medicare and Medicaid services. The behavioral health facility provides inpatient and outpatient care for mental health and substance use conditions, but CMS said its Medicare agreement would end April 30 following patient health and safety concerns. Local behavioral health leaders warned the change could leave the region with fewer inpatient beds and outpatient appointments for Medicare, Medicaid and uninsured patients.

Wellpath Layoffs 2026

Wellpath plans to lay off 89 employees across three Placer County jail locations in California as the county moves to replace its longtime jail healthcare contractor. The Nashville-based company provides medical and mental health services in correctional settings, and most of the affected roles are nursing positions.
