Dr. Ute Simon, Head, Clinical Research, Novartis Pharma GmbH

Dr. Ute Simon is Head, Clinical Research at Novartis Pharma GmbH. In this role, she leads clinical development planning in Germany, with responsibility for all of the functional activities within clinical research spanning Phase I to Phase IV trials as well as research projects and investigator-initiated trials. She heads a team of 70 people, including nine direct reports.

A scientist by training, she brings extensive experience in clinical research, project management, cross-functional team leadership and change management across various indications.

Dr. Simon joined Novartis as a lead CRA in 2006, and has held various senior positions in clinical operations. Most recently, she was Cluster Head of Clinical Operations for Germany, Austria and Switzerland. She began her career as a research assistant.

Dr. Simon earned her doctorate in Molecular Biology from Universität Halle an der Saale, with honors. She studied biology and geography and holds a degree from Technische Universität Berlin.

Dr. Nils Drews, Chief Medical Officer, Clariness

Dr. Nils Drews is Chief Medical Officer of Clariness, bringing extensive leadership experience in clinical research oversight as well as electronic data capture and digital data processing. In his current role, Dr. Drews serves as Clariness’ medical expert, providing guidance for patient identification, recruitment and retention strategies, study feasibility and site selection.

Prior to co-founding Clariness in 2005, Dr. Drews served as managing director for Deltavista, a provider of international risk management solutions.

Previously, he served as Chief Executive Officer of Varigon, a service provider of electronic data capture for clinical research. Past clinical research experience includes participation in the European Network for Understanding Mechanisms of Severe Asthma (ENFUMOSA).

Dr. Drews is a graduate of the University of Hamburg, where he earned a medical degree, and the University of Lubeck. He currently serves as Chairman, scientific committee of the Interallied Confederation of Medical Reserve Officers (CIOMR), an international association of reserve medical surgeons from NATO member states.
