We’re proud to highlight Xtalks Featured Community Member Dr. Laura Saltonstall, Vice President, Medical Affairs, Immunology at Sobi, who combines clinical expertise, strategic leadership and personal experience in rare disease to drive patient-centered innovation. Read how her work is advancing awareness, diagnosis and access to care for rare disease communities.
What Are Your Proudest Life Science Achievements?
One of my proudest achievements has been building a career that integrates clinical training, scientific leadership and a strong sense of purpose. I began my professional journey with the intention to practice medicine long term, and while that experience was deeply meaningful, I came to recognize an equally strong passion for leadership, strategy and the opportunity to influence healthcare on a broader scale.
My work in rare disease is also deeply personal. One of my daughters lives with a rare genetic syndrome and severe epilepsy, which has given me firsthand insight into the realities families face as they navigate complex medical journeys. That experience has deepened my commitment to advancing innovation, raising awareness and improving support for rare disease communities.
Professionally, I’m proud to have had the opportunity to step into leadership roles in medical affairs, including at Sobi, where I’ve helped guide large teams and translate scientific innovation into meaningful impact for patients. The most rewarding moments for me are when science, strategy and patient impact truly come together.
What Are Your Day-to-Day Job Highlights?
What I enjoy most about my role is the ability to operate at the intersection of science, leadership and patient impact. At Sobi, my work includes partnering with internal teams and external experts, helping translate complex scientific data into meaningful medical strategy and supporting efforts aimed at improving patient care.
My clinical background and personal experience as a parent navigating rare disease strongly influence my work, particularly initiatives that help close gaps in awareness, diagnosis and access to treatment. Those experiences reinforce how important it is that scientific progress ultimately translates into real improvements for patients and families.
I also find great fulfillment in leading teams — supporting professional growth, aligning around a shared mission and advancing work that is both scientifically rigorous and deeply human.
What Are Your Favorite Life Science Innovations?
I’m most inspired by innovations that deepen our understanding of disease biology and create more targeted, meaningful treatment approaches for patients. Advances in immunology, biologics and precision medicine are especially exciting as they allow the industry to move beyond broad treatment models and toward more tailored, mechanism-driven care.
I’m also very interested in innovations that improve how we work behind the scenes, particularly tools that can make evidence generation, data aggregation and drug development more efficient. There is enormous potential for AI and other technologies to help the industry move faster and smarter, while still keeping patients at the center.
Ultimately, the innovations that excite me most are those that are not only scientifically impressive, but genuinely capable of improving the patient experience.
What Is Your Vision for the Future of the Industry?
My vision for the future of the industry is one where innovation is increasingly patient-centered, collaborative and purpose-driven. Scientific advances are accelerating rapidly, but ensuring those advances reach patients requires close collaboration across industry, clinicians, researchers and patient communities.
In rare disease, in particular, I believe we will continue to see momentum — from improved scientific understanding to stronger advocacy and earlier diagnosis. As both a physician and a parent of a child with complex medical needs, I know how important it is to shorten the path between discovery and meaningful care.
The future of the industry will be shaped not only by scientific breakthroughs, but by leaders who keep patients and families at the center of every decision.
