Eli Lilly Partners with Amazon Pharmacy for Home Delivery of Drugs

Amazon Pharmacy was launched in 2020 after Amazon acquired online pharmacy PillPack.

LillyDirect Pharmacy Solutions, Eli Lilly’s direct-to-consumer (DTC) drugs website, is teaming up with Amazon Pharmacy to deliver select medications to people’s homes.

The drugs include Lilly’s newly approved GLP-1 obesity drug Zepbound (tirzepatide), around a dozen of the company’s insulins and migraine drug Emgality (galcanezumab).

Prescriptions sent to LillyDirect Pharmacy Solutions will be delivered through third-party dispensers that include online pharmacy Truepill and now Amazon Pharmacy, depending on the patient’s insurance coverage and other factors.

In a news release, Lilly announced it, “selected Amazon Pharmacy as a dispensing pharmacy option, allowing patients to receive fast, free delivery of medications and 24/7 access to clinical pharmacists.”

LillyDirect was launched at the beginning of this year to provide a digital end-to-end healthcare experience that includes access to the company’s drugs with home delivery and telehealth services.

Amazon Pharmacy’s delivery of medicines requested through LillyDirect includes access to a clinical pharmacist 24/7 who will review each prescription request and provide guidance on administration techniques, drug interactions, side effects and cost considerations.

Amazon Pharmacy said its pharmacists can also assist with reminder tools to help patients stay on top of their medication schedule and are available around the clock to answer questions and provide support care.

Amazon launched its pharmacy in 2020 after acquiring online pharmacy PillPack in 2018.

Physicians can send prescriptions for their patients either to LillyDirect Pharmacy Solutions or Amazon Pharmacy.

Lilly’s move is a significant shift in strategy as drugmakers have traditionally steered clear of delivering products to people’s homes or connecting them with healthcare providers.

In the US, around 98 million adults, which is about one in three, have prediabetes and nearly 40 million adults have diabetes. More than 40 percent of Americans are obese.

It is estimated that more than 8 million Americans rely on insulin products to manage their diabetes. The continued high demand and need for insulin, coupled with the growing popularity of new GLP-1 drugs for diabetes and obesity, necessitate new and improved ways to access drugs and quality support care.

Since both insulin and GLP-1 receptor agonist drugs are administered via injection, assistance from a pharmacy professional can be beneficial for new users.

Amazon Pharmacy offers two-day delivery service for Amazon Prime members. Amazon Pharmacy says it accepts most insurance plans and that there are additional ways to save with PrimeRx and RxPass.

Launched last year, RxPass is a prescription drug subscription that offers medications for a monthly subscription of $5 for Amazon Prime members. The subscription includes medicines for high cholesterol, anxiety and acid reflux. It also introduced a feature that allows users to use coupons at checkout to get manufacturer discounts on brand name medications.

Amazon Pharmacy says it is focused on transparent pricing and affordability of both branded and generic drugs.
