The Cauliflower Craze Heats Up! Caulipower Announces New Cauliflower Tortillas

The brand said all of its products feature cauliflower as the first ingredient and are naturally gluten-free to create “vitamin-rich, better-for-you options without compromising on taste”.

It seems like the buzz around cauliflower pizzas just died down, but in its place cauliflower tortillas are the latest food trend looking to win the hearts of gluten-free enthusiasts.

US brand Caulipower announced it is launching a line of frozen cauliflower tortillas in a move to offer a gluten-free solution to quesadillas, burritos, tacos and wraps. They come in two varieties, original and grain-free. The original is made with non-GMO corn masa, while the grain-free version contains chickpea flour.

With brands looking to keep up with the ever-evolving list of diets, it is no wonder why Caulipower wants to stay ahead of the trend by pumping out new gluten-free alternatives to people’s favorite comfort foods.

“Caulipower’s mission is to listen to what people want,” said Caulipower CEO and founder Gail Becker. “Like pizza, tortillas are beloved, versatile and a natural fit for us to create a better-for-you option.”

Are for nutritional value, two of the Caulipower Cauliflower Tortillas come in at: 120 calories, 1 g fat (0 g sat), 25 g carbs, 3 g fiber, 3 g protein, 310 mg sodium. While two of the Caulipower Grain-Free Cauliflower Tortillas have: 140 calories, 4 g fat (2 g sat), 19 g carbs, 3 g fiber, 7 g protein, 290mg sodium.

Compared to a standard flour tortilla, which has, per two tortillas: 400 calories, 9 g fat (4 g sat), 68 g carbs, 2 g fiber, 10 g protein.

Both the Original Cauliflower Tortilla and Grain Free Cauliflower Tortilla also boast being wheat and dairy-free, vegan, Non-GMO, and preservative-free. The brand said all its products feature cauliflower as the first ingredient and are naturally gluten-free to create “vitamin-rich, better-for-you options without compromising on taste”.

“Cauliflower tortillas offer another nutritious canvas to create their favourite foods – with the same great taste as our pizzas, the health benefits of cauliflower and the time-saving benefit all of us so desperately need,” said Becker.

The tortillas join Caulipower’s range of products, including its frozen cauliflower-based pizzas, available in flavours such as three cheese, veggie, and all-natural uncured pepperoni. The brand says Caulipower tortillas will be available on Amazon and at select US retailers as of February.

Cauliflower stock has been going up over the past few years, which is largely attributed to low-carb dieters seeking healthy alternatives to gluten-filled grains. US farmers sold $390 million worth of cauliflower in 2016, a sharp increase from 2012, when $239 million in cauliflower was sold, according to data reported by Times.

The versatility of cauliflower has garnered popularity among consumers seeking a substitute ingredient to an otherwise unhealthy dish. It can be mashed and buttered like potatoes, rolled into a crust like pizza or breaded and tossed in buffalo sauce to make meatless chicken wings.

Many of these items can now also be found pre-made on grocery store shelves, with retailers taking note of the vegetables’ growing demand. Tortillas are the latest to the line-up, joining the ranks of cauliflower rice and tots already familiar to shoppers.
